How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on Elf Kittens starts with one question: will this box work for the cat and the home it's being bought for? For a litter box, that means the size and weight of your cat, the litter you use and the space you have.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with your situation

A small apartment, a Maine Coon and a house with two cats each call for a different box. A box that suits one can be the wrong buy for another.

We check the cat weight range, the capacity, the footprint and the litter the maker says it takes. When your situation limits the choice, we say so.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at how the box cleans (rotating, rake or tray), the sensors, the waste drawer or bag setup, the app and the power cord. We also check what comes in the box and which parts you'll need to buy again.

Litter-Robot, PETKIT, Neakasa, Meowant, PetSafe and the other makers describe their boxes in their own words. We name the brand for every claim and note the warranty terms the maker lists.

3. We look at what owners report

We read through what owners say after using a box. We look for patterns, like sensor false alarms, jams, noise, app trouble and leftover odor.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and owner feedback against what you're shopping for. A box that's great for a large cat may score lower in a guide for small spaces.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. Makers also sell similar boxes under close names, so we check each model name and what's in the box, and we only link new units.

We skip unknown brands with no track record and any box with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every box we cover.

We don't call any box safe for every cat. Check the maker's minimum cat weight, follow the manual and watch how your own cat reacts.

If your cat seems unwell or avoids the box, talk to your vet. We label maker claims as the maker's claims.
